CTC aims high with new growth strategy
The CTC has announced a far-reaching development plan which will see its campaigning work grow by more than a third over the next 18 months. The new strategy, launched at the Annual General Meeting, will see the CTC become a limited company while a recruitment drive will aim at adding coach operator and supplier members. A new Partnership Programme will offer an extensive marketing package to five supplier organisations to generate further income.
Speaking to an audience of more than 80 members at the AGM - generously hosted by Accor at the impressive Mercure Albrighton Hall Hotel near Shrewsbury on 6 June - CTC chairman Sean Taggart said a working group would be tasked with drafting the new Articles of Association for the CTC to complete the changes by the end of the year. The outcome would be a properly structured organisation better able to achieve its core aim of promoting coach tourism.

“For 2011 we raised the supplier membership subscription fees at a rate well above the current rate of inflation, while freezing fees for coach operator members,” he said. “We anticipate that this higher level of subscription fees, combined with our targeted increase in the number of fully paid-up members of the CTC, will generate between £15,000 and £20,000 of the planned £35,000 increase in annual income.”
Mr Taggart added: “This will build a platform so that the CTC is a more powerful voice for its members. Taking the next step will further our direct PR activity and though our membership networking opportunities, help build further on the image of coach tourism.”
The first of the CTC's Partnership Programme members was also announced at the AGM. Wightlink Ferries has taken the first of five places and will get a preferential suite of sponsorship benefits including guaranteed exposure at events.
In the past year the CTC has recruited 65 new members and attracted press exposure for coach tourism in national and regional newspaper and magazines with more than 20 million readers. It has also formed alliances with all the UK's national tourist offices and has a seat on the CPT's Coach Commission.
Chief executive Chris Wales gave a resume of the ‘CTC year’ and Paul Ovington gave an overview of PR activity. Following the AGM Kevin James of IFA Towergate Financial gave a presentation on new company pension schemes while Ali Naqvi of Pellys Transport & Regulatory Law gave up update on new legislation affecting coach operators. Chocolate aids retirement!
At the end of the meeting retiring CTC treasurer Mark Wood, who stepped down from the CTC Board at the AGM having sold his Woods Coaches business to a management buyout headed by Kevin Brown, was given a surprise when chairman Sean Taggart presented he and his wife Pauline with a photo montage and a specially created chocolate plaque kindly donated by Cadbury World.

2011 CTC Board elections
A third of member companies voted in the annual elections for four places on the Coach Tourism Council Board which attracted an excellent cross section of nine candidates from across the coach tourism industry. In a closely fought contest with literally a handful of votes again separately several candidates the following were elected:
Jones Holidays - Alun Jones was re-elected for a further three years while three member companies were elected to the Board for the first time. They are Bakers Dolphin Coach Travel (Amanda Harrington), Coach Monthly/Expo Management (Stuart Render) and Stena Line (Graham Howatson).
Sean Taggart (Albatross Travel Group) and Jane Duffelen (Shaws Coaches), were unanimously re-elected as chairman and vice chairman respectively.
